Estepona, the garden of the Costa del Sol.

Estepona, in the province of Malaga, has history going back centuries. Stone age tools, roman remains and artefacts from Moorish times have all been found in the area. Estepona was given its own royal charter in 1729 by Philip V of Spain, when there were only 9000 residents.

Today, Estepona has two main areas; the old town, which is dominated by the clock tower, the church of Los Remedios and the San Luis Castle, built in the 15th Century by Queen Elisabella I, and then there is the sports marina, with its many bars, restaurants and cafes, which is also home to the Sunday market.

Estepona boasts two EU Blue flag beaches - Playa la Rada and Playa del Cristo - both of which have cheringuitos or beach bars selling drinks and food and they also offer day hire of loungers.

These days, Estepona's main focus is tourism with visitors from all over Europe. The flower lined streets and varities of palm trees have given rise to Estepona being known as the Garden of the Costa del Sol.

For international transport links, Estepona is conveniently located between Malaga Airport (IATA Code AGP) and Gibraltar International Airport (GIB), being 55 minutes drive from Malaga and 35 minutes from Gibraltar. The bus station of Estepona is towards the East of the town and has links to major Spanish towns.
